Microscope

Browse hosted slides, save a view to an entry, and inspect that view from the Library or a quiz.

Checked against the current app on 2026-10-03.

Open a microscope slide

Pin a slide with Pin to study stack; use Remove from pinned study stack to unpin it. In the main viewer, a desktop left drag uses Laser pen or Pencil, a right drag pans, and a stationary right-click opens the pointer menu. Touch uses pan/pinch gestures.

  1. Choose Microscope in the app navigation. If it is hidden, enable Microscope in Settings → Viewer.
  2. Use Search slides or browse Histology, Pathology, Embryology, and Pinned slides.
  3. Click or tap a slide once to select it; a mobile selection shows a preview.
  4. Click or tap the selected slide again to open the microscope.
  5. Use − / +, Home, Map, Fullscreen, Sharpen, and Brightness. Exit returns to the app.

Add a slide with Tag Microscope Slide

  1. Select an editable Study Notes entry.
  2. In Images for this entry, click Tag Microscope Slide.
  3. Search and choose a hosted slide. Wait for its preview to open.
  4. Pan and zoom the preview to the location you want to save.
  5. Click Add to attach the saved view, or Cancel to leave without adding it.

Add the current main Microscope view to an entry

  1. Sign in and open an editable pack, then open a hosted catalog slide in Microscope.
  2. Pan and zoom to the view you want to keep.
  3. Right-click without dragging and choose Add to entry.
  4. Search for and select the destination entry in the current pack.
  5. Click Add.

Open and move an attached slide viewer

The viewer has a thin bezel and remains movable and resizable. Navigating this inspection window does not change the saved attachment view or the main Microscope view. Inspecting does not duplicate or convert the slide.

Saved previews can remain visible when a catalog lookup fails, but a removed or unavailable hosted slide cannot open its deep viewer. If a slide is temporarily unavailable while its hosted files finish uploading, select it again to retry.

  1. Click a slide preview or Inspect in the entry, or in its Identify quiz.
  2. The attachment opens at its saved center and zoom in the same standard viewer for either attachment path.
  3. Drag the slide to pan. Use wheel/pinch zoom, or double-click/tap to zoom.
  4. Move or resize the window using its edges. A right-click-and-drag moves the entire attachment window.
  5. Press Escape or click outside to close.

Import a microscope package

The catalog’s Import menu offers Import folder — DZI folder package and Import slides — DZI ZIP, slide.json, or .dzi. Choose a complete compatible package; a folder chooser is used where supported, with a folder-file input fallback.

These are microscope source packages, not .gqb/.gqa study packs. Device-imported sources cannot use the hosted Add to entry attachment action.

Questions and answers

How do I add a microscope slide?

Select an editable Study Notes entry, click Tag Microscope Slide in Images for this entry, search and choose a hosted slide, adjust its preview, and click Add. From a signed-in main Microscope session with an editable pack, stationary right-click → Add to entry saves the current hosted view instead.

Why is Add to entry missing from the Microscope right-click menu?

It appears only for a connected account with an editable pack and a fully opened hosted catalog slide. Device-imported slides and touch pan/pinch gestures do not offer this pointer-menu action. Use the entry’s Tag Microscope Slide path on touch devices.

Will inspecting an attachment change its saved location?

No. Inspection starts from the attachment’s saved center and zoom. Panning or zooming that independent viewer does not rewrite the attachment or move the main Microscope view.
